The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center was recently recognized by the Coraopolis NAACP with a prestigious 2026 Community Service Award at its fifth annual Freedom Fund Banquet.

The award is presented to local organizations exemplifying “selfless dedication, compassionate service and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others in our community.”

“It has been almost 10 years since we opened our doors, and even before then, we began reaching out to different partners in the region to ensure that this cultural venue would be relevant in terms of programming and accessibility,” said Lindsay CEO Carolina Thor, accepting the award on behalf of the organization.

“Our team regularly reviews our offerings to ensure that we are doing our job when it comes to cultural inclusivity and representation. We are very honored by this recognition.”

The NAACP and Sewickley nonprofit theater have partnered for several years on programming and events.

Earlier this year, The Lindsay hosted the Coraopolis chapter’s first Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) talent showcase. Several local youths will advance to the national ACT-SO program, which prepares, recognizes and rewards teens for academic, entrepreneurial and artistic endeavors.

“Having a working partnership with The Lindsay Theater over the past several years has proved to be a very valuable experience,” says Coraopolis NAACP President Carter Spruill. “This year, we took that partnership to the next level by having The Lindsay Theater serve as host for our ACT-SO Awards program, which was a huge success.

“We look forward to a continued working relationship, and we are proud to have awarded The Lindsay Theater this year with the Coraopolis NAACP 2026 Community Service Award.”

In addition to The Lindsay, the Coraopolis NAACP also acknowledged the Coraopolis Community Development Corporation and Robert Morris University’s Office of People and Culture with Community Service Awards, presented at the Montour Heights Country Club. Three students—one each from Cornell, Moon and Quaker Valley schools—also received scholarships based on academics, financial literacy and community service.

Since first opening its doors in 2017, The Lindsay has been dedicated to inclusivity and accessibility. This region’s only nonprofit theater made Pennsylvania history by launching weekly open caption screenings and pioneering sensory friendly screenings northwest of Pittsburgh.

The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center is an independent, film-driven arts nonprofit open 365 days a year. Located in Sewickley, near major highways and on public transit routes, it offers two screening rooms and flexible event/performance spaces.

The Lindsay made Pennsylvania history in 2021 as the first cinema in the state offering weekly, all-day Open Caption screenings and pioneered sensory friendly events northwest of Pittsburgh. Through its Emerging Filmmakers Showcases, The Lindsay provides its big screen, technical capabilities and marketing support to local filmmakers. Theater staff is recognized for providing an exceptional experience while screening daily new releases and offering special series, film festivals, live performances and its own Documentary Series. Trees Charitable Trust, A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust, Valley Care Foundation, the Child Health Association of Sewickley, more than 1,000 individual donors—and, of course, its patrons.

In addition, The Lindsay received funding from Pennsylvania Creative Industries, powered by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts.
